Monash University collaboration with industry partner KFive, for the Phenomenal Fungi Project.
A team of interdisciplinary students formed groups to experiment and produce furniture prototypes made of mycelium that could return to where it came from – soil – without harm at the end of its life. This was a 12 week research project with a focus on sustainability and design.
Bubbles.
Group Designers: Rachel Chee & Rina Miyake
Bubbles is a series of experimental acoustic wall panels that explores the concept of ‘aliveness’ through its emphasis on sustainability and visual aesthetics. We started the journey through our initial substrate investigations, where we developed a strong interest in colour and texture. By experimenting with non toxic food colouring, we have developed a way for the mycelium to grow with a hint of colour. As the panels were grown inside a 3D printed mould, a faint surface texture can be noticed on the mycelium, created by the inner contours of the mould. The panels have been designed to be tiled on the wall and they can be rearranged into different patterns.
Phenomenal Fungi, KFive and Monash University’s collaboration project, was a Finalist for the 2022 Victorian Premier’s Award in Student Design.
